Professional Whitening
One of the quickest, easiest and safest ways to enhance your smile is through tooth whitening. Whether or not you have perfectly straight teeth, tooth whitening can bring a new sparkle to your face and have you smiling with confidence again.
There are many reasons why teeth can become discolored. The major reasons are:
- Diet – Drinking tea, coffee, red wine or other food and drink with strong coloring.
- Smoking – Smoking can result in teeth appearing a yellowish color.
- Age – As people grow older their teeth can become darker naturally.
- Tooth decay, fillings and tartar build-up can cause discoloration.
- Trauma – Teeth have nerves and blood vessels inside them. If these nerves and blood vessels are damaged the tooth may become darker – even several years after the trauma.
- Medication – Staining can be caused by diseases or medication. Tetracycline, an antibiotic, will cause discoloration if given to a child who adult teeth are still developing.
Dentist supervised at-home tooth whitening systems use custom made bleaching trays that are created to fit the contours of your teeth. The patient places the bleaching agent into the tray and wears it for the recommended time. These systems can be highly effective when used correctly.
How to Keep Teeth White
- Regular cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar.
- Regular tooth brushing. (But use caution here; brushing too frequently can cause damage to enamel).
- Stop smoking.
- Reducing the intake of food and drink that are strongly colored such as coffee, tea, red wine, etc.
